Precision nutrition
The availability of precision systems for application of nitrogen to root systems at precise developmental stages will allow the relationships between phenology and nitrogen nutrition to be explored under field conditions. Parallel experiments in the UK (Rothamsted) and India (BISA) will therefore examine the effects of timing of applied fertiliser in relation to phenological characteristics on overall NUE. The experiments at Rothamsted will use conventional N application methods. At BISA field experiments will be conducted for three years on Rice-Wheat and Maize-Wheat cropping systems under conservation agriculture, with selected genotypes being evaluated at different rates of nitrogen application using sub-surface fertigation.
